Civic Education Advocacy Fellowship

The Civic Education Advocacy Fellow will work directly with Discovering Justice staff and members of the Massachusetts Civic Learning Coalition (MCLC) to help coordinate public education and advocacy on statewide civic education programs, legislation, and policy. 

  1. Maintain the Massachusetts Civics Project Trust Fund Budget at $2.5M through the state budget process.
  2. Increase the number of school districts applying for Civics Project Trust Fund grants through outreach and marketing.
  3. Cultivate and steward partnerships with students, teachers, school administrators, and local civic education leaders with state legislators. 
  4. Coordinate a legislative event during Civics Week 

Qualifications

  • Is passionate about civic education and the need to protect and promote our democracy.
  • Interest in experience with recruiting and managing volunteers.
  • Loves working with a team and wants to learn new skills.
  • Is a recent graduate or college student on an off-term or gap year
  • Can commit to working 35 hours a week with a dynamic and energetic staff (at least 25 hours for a Part-Time Fellowship).

Civic Education Advocacy Fellowship Responsibilities

The Advocacy Fellow will work with the Executive Director and members of MCLC to assist in the delivery of this program. The position consists of:

  • Public Education and Advocacy: Coordinate public education and advocacy on statewide civic education programs, legislation, and policy. 
  • Recruitment and Management of Volunteers: Recruit, train, and engage MCLC leaders, teachers, and students in public education and advocacy work.
  • Attention to detail: Organize and maintain accurate information about volunteers and participants in MCLC’s databases and prepare administrative and program materials critical to the programs’ success.
  • Project management: Juggle the day-to-day duties of coordinating MCLC’s public education and advocacy programs.
  • Communication and writing skills: Communicate with and coordinate volunteers, legislators, students, and community members over email, the phone, and in person. 
  • Event planning: Support the planning and execution of an event at the State House for state legislators and their staff
  • Adaptable and driven: Assist other program and organizational needs of Discovering Justice when needed.

Stipend

Stipends range from $7,500-$9,000 for the 18-week program running from January 29 to May 31

Location

Our office is situated inside the John Joseph Moakley U.S. Courthouse in the Seaport District of Boston. The Fellow typically works in person at the Courthouse two to three days a week at the Moakley and two to three days remotely.
